NOTE: THIS POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FROM CARAVAL BY STEPHANIE GARBER. PLEASE DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO KNOW WHAT OCCURS IN CHAPTERS 9-21 OF THE NOVEL. THANK YOU.
In these chapters we start to learn more about Caraval, the game and the rules. One of the more important rules is to get into their lodgings before sun up or be left out in the cold. Julian almost gets caught out until Scarlet uses her name and the fact she is a special guest to get him back inside. They also find out that because everyone thinks they are engaged, they will be sharing a room and a bed, which Scarlet does not like, at all. She wants to go get another room, but before she can do so, the first clue to the game arrives.
It ends up being a room key at the same inn. Scarlett can hear her sister in the room, but her sister warns her not to come in. Scarlett obeys her and ends up falling asleep in the hallway and ends up meeting a brother and sister, Dante and Valentina. Dante offers Scarlett his room where she sleeps for the night. In the morning she goes back to her sister’s room and discovers it in shambles. Other people come in and start picking through the room, trying to find clues to the game, including earrings that belonged to her mother. Scarlett discovers finding her sister is the object of the game and she knows she must win.
Scarlett and Julian go through Caraval looking for clues. Scarlett is suspicious of all that is offered, knowing there is always a price. She sits down with a fortune teller and Julian leaves. After the reading, she ends up in a potion shop and gets a protection potion. She then finds a fountain and ends up following a secret passage to underground tunnels where she sees very disturbing things. Upon returning to the inn, she finds Julian with cuts and bruises, like he has been in a fight. He hands Scarlett her mother’s earrings. Scarlett asks if he’s been in the tunnels and Julian denies it. End of day one.
These chapters both set up the rules and the object of the game the people are playing. They also show how much people are willing to do to win and demonstrate the magic within the game.
I ended up with a lot more questions than answers on this section? What happened to Donatella, what was the fortune teller telling Scarlett. What were the tunnels all about. I certainly wanted to read more.
